Our Guide to Northwest Arkansas

Our quest to find the best coffee in the nation recently took us to Arkansas, the home of Onyx Coffee Lab. With locations in Fayetteville, Bentonville, and Springdale, between cups of coffee we took it upon ourselves to explore all that Northwest Arkansas has to offer!

We stayed at Fayetteville in an Airbnb located near downtown, and it was the perfect home base as we explored the city. This quirky college town, home to the University of Arkansas, offers lots of outdoor adventures, but since we visited in chilly December, we absolutely recommend trading hikes for spending time in the town square. As it was close to the holidays, downtown Fayetteville was decked out in full Christmas style, with Christmas lights, reindeer rides, and even Santa! While you’re downtown, be sure to pop into some of the boutiques lining the square. We especially recommend stopping in Savoy Tea Co to peruse their massive selection of unique loose leaf teas. Our other must-see stop in Fayetteville is Dickson Street Bookshop. Located in Fayetteville’s Entertainment District, this second-hand bookstore is a bibliophile’s dream! Thousands of books fill endless rows of shelves with every topic imaginable, and if you really want to bring home a lot of new novels, there are special discount books for sale outside the front of the shop!

There is no shortage of fun places to eat in Fayetteville. Our favorite place that we ate in the city was Hammontree’s Grilled Cheese. We absolutely loved their impressive range of gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches. We recommend the Brie’s Company if you’re looking for something sweet, or the Scarlet Cheddar for a more classic sandwich.

Home of the original Walmart, Bentonville is similar to Fayetteville, but brings its own unique style. Like Fayetteville, the town center in Bentonville was covered in Christmas lights, but we think Bentonville was even more into the holiday spirit. Christmas carolers were singing on the sidewalks, and every third person we saw had on a Christmas hat! While in the town square, you can visit the Walmart museum, which includes a free tour through the history of Walmart. The red and white storefront offers traditional Walmart branded souvenirs and at the end of the museum, there is a classic ice cream parlor to finish off your tour with a sweet treat!

If you’re looking for a place to eat on the square, we recommend Pressroom, a contemporary restaurant that offers unique twists on classic dishes from breakfast to dinner. Plus, it’s attached to Onyx because we know that it is never possible to have too much coffee.

Even though we were only able to stay for a short time, Northwest Arkansas’ charm (and coffee!) had us wanting to stay longer! Have you ever been to a city in Northwest Arkansas? Let us know in the comments what our first stop should be on our next trip! And be sure to check out our post about our visit to Onyx!
